Istanbul Theatre Festival
Bringing together theatre companies and dance groups from Turkey and abroad with the audience, The Istanbul Theatre Festival, first held in 1989, is an international event organised during three weeks in May. Organised biennially since 2002, the festival hosts carefully selected companies and artists that open up new horizons for both the audience and the art world. Once in every two years, national and international, classical and contemporary renditions are brought to the stage through the lens of the Istanbul Theatre Festival.
The festival’s first production, Tribute to Nâzım, written and performed by Genco Erkal was staged in 2002, on the 100th anniversary of Nâzım Hikmet’s birthday. Following this first step, local companies have begun to participate in the festival with their new projects. This process stimulated the festival in every possible way and still continues to do so. Aiming to underline artistic intersections, similarities and disparities, the festival puts emphasis on co-productions and expands the scope of its activities in this field. One of the events carried out by the festival within this scope was Nefes, co-produced with Tanztheatre Wuppertal Pina Bausch in 2003 and still travelling the world. Another event that lies within this framework is the fourth edition of the International Theatre Olympics that gathered numerous companies in Istanbul in 2006 as part of the festival.
The Istanbul Theatre Festival, together with the Avignon Festival, the Athens & Epidaurus Festival, the Grec Festival, has formed the European Network of Mediterranean Festivals entitled Kadmos. Kadmos continues to carry out its activities as a network supporting not only co-productions but also common educational fields. Moreover, The Kadmos Travel Project continues to provide opportunities for young artists and playwrights from different countries to attend the festivals abroad. Together with Piccolo Teatro di Milano, the Istanbul Theatre Festival also took the first steps to implement another educational project entitled the “Mediterranean Project.”
Every year since 1997 the Istanbul Theatre Festival presents two Lifetime Achievement Awards to one local and one international artist. With its educational programmes, co-productions and themes that are related to social problems, the Istanbul Theatre Festival continues to bring new topics and works in performance arts to Istanbul.
Istanbul University Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy Department
Istanbul University Theatre Criticism and Dramaturgy Department is founded in 1992 to educate theatre researchers, dramaturgs and theatre critics in order to fill the intellectual, theoretical and literary gap in Turkish theatre.
Inaugurated on 8 June 2005, Pera Museum is a private museum founded by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation. The aim of offering an outstanding range of diverse high quality culture and art services is as important today as when the Museum first opened its doors to the public.
Couched in the historic quarter of Tepebaşı, the impressive building was originally conceived as the Bristol Hotel. Restorer and architect Sinan Genim was given the daunting renovation operation in 2003; the triumph of transforming the interior into a modern and fully equipped museum is only matched by the architect’s mastery in simultaneously preserving the exterior façade, safeguarding an integral part of Istanbul’s architectural flavour.
Through Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation’s three permanent collections, “Orientalist Paintings”, “Anatolian Weights and Measures”, and “Kütahya Tiles and Ceramics”, Pera Museum seeks not only to diffuse the aesthetic beauty of these collections but also to create dialogue with the public concerning the values and identities that they encompass. Utilizing a full scope of innovative methods, including exhibitions, publications, audio-visual events, educational activities, and academic works, the objective of transmitting the beauty and importance of these works to future generations is realised. Having organized joint projects with leading international museums, collections, and foundations including Tate Britain, Victoria and Albert Museum, St. Petersburg Russian State Museum, JP Morgan Chase Collection, New York School of Visual Arts, and the Maeght Foundation, Pera Museum has introduced Turkish audiences to countless internationally acclaimed artists. Some of the most illustrious amongst these include Jean Dubuffet, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Rembrandt, Niko Pirosmani, Josef Koudelka, Joan Miró, Akira Kurosawa, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Fernando Botero, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Goya.
Since its inauguration, Pera Museum collaborates annually with national and international institutions of art and education to hold exhibitions that support young artists. All of the Museum’s exhibitions are accompanied by books, catalogues, audio-visual events in addition to education programs. Parallel to its seasonal programs and events, Pera Film offers visitors and film buffs a wide range of screenings that extend from classics and independent movies to animated films and documentaries. Pera Film also hosts special shows that directly correlate with the temporary exhibitions’ themes.
Pera Museum has evolved to become a leading and distinguished cultural center in one of the liveliest quarters of İstanbul.
